More money wasted: The Nanaimo property

The BC SPCA, under the previous CEO, acquired property in Nanaimo slated for a new SPCA shelter. It has an existing large barn and a small house. The barn, though dilapidated on the outside, has a very sound basic structure. (I had it checked by a structural engineer shortly after the property had been bought.)

Both buildings have been hangouts for vandals on a continuous basis.

Through the year 2003 and into 2004 I had spent much of the SPCA's money (with approval) and some of my own in attempting to secure the buildings again and again, without success.

The barn is a priceless structure and if lost (by fire) could not be replaced.

In July 2004 John van der Hoeven of head office asked again to see what could be done to secure the building and I sent him a report with suggestions (attached separately) and then an other E-mail asking John to meet me on site, or anywhere else, at his convenience, so we may discuss this issue.

All I received was a one-liner saying he could not come for some two months.

Well, at least that was one line more than what I usually received from H.O. in my many attempts to communicate.

In Fall of 2004 I found that, against my suggestions, a contractor had been engaged to secure the building once more.

Now after a waste of, I understand, some $2000.00 the building again is vandalized with more openings broken into than ever before.

Then at this last Nanaimo AGM we were told that due to financial difficulties the property will have to be sold.
However I hear of late, that there is some rethinking and they (BCSPCA) may hold on to it, for now anyway.

With all other and much more serious happenings, I wonder how much longer the CEO and the B.of D. will be able to function.
