Bella Bella Sterilization Program *LINK*

Bella Bella Bound

Big Heart Rescue will be meeting with the Chief and Council from Bella Bella on May 19th, 2005 so we may present a proposal for a free spay, neuter and vaccination clinic to be held at the end of September or early October.

Because this small isolated First Nations reserve does not have a resident vet many companion pets go without basic medical care and the cost of having a dog sterilized off island is in the $350.00 range. Additionally, owners must either fly or travel by boat with their companions to Port Hardy to access vet care and this adds to the cost of any treatment.

Because of the generosity of Pacific Coastal Airlines, volunteer vet technicians and vets, Big Heart Rescue will hopefully sterilize approximately 50 dogs/cats, provide vaccinations, parasite control and de-worming during our clinic days. And while all services have been donated there is still a dire need for additional funds to purchase basic medical supplies, vaccinations and medications.

Also, in Bella Bella dogs that do not wear a tag are considered "ownerless" and the RCMP can shot them as a means of animal control. To prevent this, Big Heart Rescue will be bringing along collars, BHR identification tags and will purchase licenses ($10.00 per dog per year) for each dog that comes through the clinic.

Our major fundraiser at this time is our Spring Basket raffle and the funds raised from this endeavour will be used towards our goal of reducing unwanted litters, disease and despair for the animals of Bella Bella.

AAS has posted a picture and payment information for the raffle and if you wish any further information please feel free to contact spiritsmission@shaw.ca
