Ontario court ruling means owners can claim lost pets even after sold to new owner

Giant Step Backward for Animals
TORONTO, April 21 /CNW/ - The Toronto Humane Society will appeal Judge Don Godfrey's ruling in Provincial court today that puts into question the ability of shelters, humane societies and municipal pounds to find new homes for animals.
For 118 years, The Toronto Humane Society has been finding new homes for abandoned and lost animals that have been kept at the shelter for a reasonable amount of time to allow their original owners to find and claim them.
Now, according to Judge Godfrey's ruling, no matter how long an adopted animal has lived in its new home, a previous owner can make a claim and take the animal away.
"This change is bound to put a chill on adoptions and could mean over crowded shelters with many pets needlessly euthanized," said Tim Trow, President of The Toronto Humane Society.
The Toronto Humane Society will appeal to protect the integrity of its operations but also for other humane societies and shelters throughout the Province of Ontario.
