Alberni Valley Times:
OWNER EXPECTED TO FINANCE DOG'S CARE

"I am 56 years old, on provincial disability. My little dog got very sick and I didn't know what to do, or where to go as I have no money and she needed to be put out of her misery. A friend said I should take her to the local SPCA so I bundled her up, arranged for transportation and took her shaking and convulsing into their office.

First I went in by myself, then I was asked to bring the dog in, so I did so. They looked at her and told me it would cost 25 dollars. I told them my situation and they said sorry but I had to come back when I had the money.

I am outraged, the poor little thing looked so pathetic and sick and here they were turning me away, a society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and here they were being so cruel as one could possibly be. So after hours of trying to borrow the money, which I was unable as everyone I know is in the same boat. One person said I should pawn something, but I had nothing of value to pawn. I thought of my stereo, but it was 15 years old and I didn't think I would get anything for it, but I tried anyway.

I took it to Harbourcity Pawn Brokers on Gertrude and after hearing my story, they felt so bad they loaned me the money, it seems the pawn shop has more heart than the SPCA. It would seem the only thing on their mind is money ! TOTALLY DISGUSTED......Joanne Freeman, Port Alberni

Margaret Tipton, Nanaimo...and I too am disgusted.
