Tell Safeway Canada to smarten up and stop selling farmed salmon!

Back in April we told you about some new scientific evidence showing that salmon farms are a potentially lethal source of sea lice for wild salmon. The study from the University of Alberta, shows that sea lice infestation levels around salmon farms are up to 70 times greater than areas without salmon farms. Read the study

In light of this new evidence the Farmed and Dangerous markets team invited Safeway Canada’s Vice President of Public Relations, David Ryzebol, to visit the Broughton Archipelago and witness the sea lice epidemic firsthand, but he declined. Safeway continues to ignore the growing body of scientific evidence showing dangerous levels of PCB’s, PBDE’s and dioxins in farmed salmon. Now, Safeway is choosing to ignore the evidence of sea lice epidemics killing B.C’s wild salmon. Send a fax telling Safeway to smarten up and stop selling farmed salmon.

In the last two years the Farmed and Dangerous team has attended Safeway’s Annual General Meetings, educated shareholders and executives, presented the issue to Safeway executives, helped consumers deliver over 20,000 faxes urging Safeway to stop selling farmed salmon, run "Smarten Up Safeway" ads in the New York Times and public transit fleets in San Francisco and still Safeway continues to remain indignant on this issue. Safeway’s newest marketing scheme includes a series of advertisements claiming they have the “Ingredients for Life”, however their continued sale of B.C farmed salmon should prompt a slogan of “Ingredients for Lice” as the decimation of wild salmon from sea lice continues.

Send a fax to Safeway Canada telling them to Smarten Up and Stop selling farmed salmon until it is safe for us, and safe for our oceans.
