Zoocheck asks for review of Grouse Mountain Refuge

Mayor and Council Sent by fax and e-mail

District of North Vancouver Council

We have recently been advised that a motion will be coming before council on Monday June 13th(delayed until June 20th)requesting a report from District staff regarding the District’s jurisdiction over Grouse Mountain, in particular the captive wildlife held at that facility.

We are very concerned with a number of management practices at the facility, most notably husbandry practices and the mixing of species in a confined area. As you are probably aware, the media recently reported a wolf which had been killed by a bear at the facility in the presence of visitors to Grouse Mountain.

We respectfully request that the council support the motion to determine the jurisdiction of the District over the facility and take all appropriate actions to ensure that the animals’ welfare is paramount and that this sort of tragedy does not occur again.

Yours sincerely,
