One year ago today, some Delta SPCA staff and volunteers stopped the SPCA from killing an innocent pup named Cheech by stealing him right from under the SPCA's nose and right on CTV!

This is the story that woke a lot of people up to the SPCA's business of animal control and disposal. Killing Cheech was justified by the SPCA on the spurious grounds that he was a public danger, and to bolster that claim the SPCA told a lot of outright lies.

The SPCA lost the Delta animal control contract, not because it was going to kill a dog - that is done frequently at SPCAs, and municipalities do not ever question whether the deaths are deserved or just a way for the SPCA to keep expenses down.

It lost the contract because of the astonishing display of anger by the CEO, because of his refusal to accept offers from rehabilitators to take Cheech (who didn't actually need any rehabilitation, he only needed to get out of the SPCA)and because the astonishing display of lies told about Cheech.

And because the SPCA's P.R. person, Lorie Chortyk (she still has her job) said of the Delta Mayor and Council when they said they would not renew their contract with the SPCA, that they didn't care if dangerous dogs were let loose to harm Delta's children.
