Canned hunts in Alberta banned

From the Globe and Mail, August 8/02

Ralph Klein says "To go to a hunt farm and shoot a penned up animal that doesn't have a chance, I think it's abhorrent...People simply do not like the idea, and neither do I".

But this is still legal in Saskatchewan and Quebec.

I wonder how our society ever got to the point of even considering such cruelty? How is this any different than cock and dog fighting, bull fighting, and other barbaric sports that use animal suffering and helplessness to give pleasure (and arousal?) to some creepy men (and some even creepier women?)

The article goes on to say that breeders of the victims have lost some of their Asian market for antler velvet recently so they were looking for "other uses" for the helpless beings they breed such as elk and deer.

Anyone know what antler velvet is used for?
