The ethics of transferring animals between geographic locations for rescue purposes is a difficult dilemma. Consideration needs to be given to donors, funding bodies and transport costs.
It is my personal belief that the first obligation of the BCSPCA is to the animals of BC. Prince George animals face possible euthanasia every day even without a breed ban. Simple logic will tell you that 6 homes taken by dogs from Ontario are 6 less homes available to BC dogs. When so many animals are dying every day I would even question whether the cross-country transportation costs paid by any society is the best use of that money. Maybe it would be better spent on spay and neuter. All puppies are extremely cute, and sadly, are adopted much more quickly than adults. If pit bull pups are difficult to adopt out in Ontario because of the new legislation and societies want to pay transport costs, then fair enough. Bring the pups out here but load an equal number of different breed pups on the return flight to Ontario and keep the overall numbers unchanged. That way BC animals, who I believe should take the priority, won’t suffer the consequences of importing from other regions.
