Mass resignations a clear signal
Editor:
I was struck with the dismissive tone of the BCSPCA to the problems voiced by workers and vol¬unteers at the local shelter (Coast Reporter, Sept. 1).
To suggest 'that policy is now being followed as the reason for discontent is pathetic. Twenty-plus resignations is a scream on behalf of the animals by those who have given up their paid jobs and long held volunteer positions.
I have worked with many of the staff and vol¬unteers who have recently resigned the SPCA shel¬ter on Field Road. I know them to give the high¬est standard of care and dedication to the animals and their well-being. They are experienced and have managed for years to keep the animals healthy and happy under some very trying conditions.
The mass resignation of staff and volunteers must send a clear signal to the community that there is a management disaster at the Field Road shelter. How can new untrained staff and volunteers, even the . best intentioned, maintain the quality of care provided by experi¬enced people? The public must investigate and chal¬lenge the current manage¬ment to be transparent and accountable. All who know the current state of affairs must write.
The BCSPCA is run as any large corporation, albeit on donated dol¬lars and volunteer hours. Consider asking for an accounting of the treat¬ment of both animals and the humans in their care when you are asked for your next donation.
