I've had plenty of dogs come in with tattoos that are completely unreadable. I've also had 2 dogs with microchips that I was unable to trace.
A third with a microchip that took 3 days to get the information through.
My reason for stating these facts is not for further argument - but to inform people that you cannot rely on ANY kind of single identification on your animal. All animals should be photographed (from every angle and especially showing any identifying markings). They should be tattooed, Microchipped, licensed (where applicable) and wear an owner ID tag. Photographs should be taken on at least a yearly basis. If your pet goes missing, don't just telephone the local shelter and animal control. Go in with the photos! I also recommend that you go to all vet clinics, pet stores, newspapers, radio stations, and possibly anyone involved in animals, such as doggie bakeries, pet stores, etc. Another good place to inquire is with the local post office (speak to letter carriers if you can), your municipal office, the gas company (any business that has employees on the road, especially if on foot)
These steps can also be taken if you find an animal.

Now I realize that there are a lot of people that believe that microchipping and tattooing is horribly cruel - I know there are a lot of people that don't believe in putting a collar or harness on an animal - and I know that there are a few people that don't believe in "confining" their pet, but if you truly want to PROTECT your pet, this is good advice.
