Re: North Van City/SPCA - no help for feral cats

I too had a dissapointing response from the SPCA when I first contacted them about the feral cat problem in Tofino. After explaining how large the problem is and how many animals are dying, I was told that this SPCA branch doesn't lend out their traps, and there was nothing they could do to help. I asked if there were any programs to help cover the cost of spaying and neutering, and was told that if I qualified for low income assistance, they could reduce the cost of s/n of my own cats (MY CATS??) in their clinic. I explained once again that these were feral and abandoned cats, and was told that there was nothing they could do and there were no programs to help me. So I went out, bought a trap ($75) and started doing things on my own. There are hundreds of cats that are dying slowly from starvation and brutally from accidental killing, along our waterfront. Feral mother cats have no shelter along the waterfront to give birth to their kittens, and end up using the fishing nets at the fish plant to give birth and hide their kittens in. I cannot count the number of kittens that have been killed accidentally by plant workers who must move the nets on a daily basis (sometimes, a survivor will be found clinging to the net). I deal with many orphan kittens whose mothers are killed when they are trapped between pallets containing fish feed. I can't afford to continue to trap, spay and neuter on my own, nevermind deal with so many kittens (food, litter, advertising for adoptive homes), but there is no help from the SPCA, so what options am I left with?
