CYA would like to report the following events.

MARCH 2003: Tim Wittenberg of CYA, files complaint with Freedom of Information Commissioner because the Ministry of Agriculture releases his private information to BCSPCA when it responds to one of his letters.

MAY 2003:FOI Commissioner's Office finds the Ministry in breech of the FOI Act and the Ministry must correct it's practices.

JAN 2004:Tim presents his case to the Legislature's Special FOI Review Committee in Vancouver.

FEB 2004:Kimberly Daum presents report with analysis of Tim's case and other issues to FOI Review Committee.

APRIL 2004;CYA submits FOI request for correspondence about CYA between the Ministry and the BCSPCA.

MAY 2004:Ministry wants $173.50 for 14 pages of copies.

May 2004:FOI Legislature Review Committee recommends the Government investigate the BCSPCA's dual status as a public body and a non profit society.

This is an important development because the Special Review Committee agrees with CYA's position that the BCSPCA requires Government investigation.

We are excited about what our FOI request could produce. We think the price is outrageous but know the fastest way to get those documents is by paying for them now. We have 2 weeks to raise the cash and if you can help with that support or with letters of thanks or encouragement to Special Committee Members, or with letters of pressure to the Premier, or all of the above. Please jump in. We will appreciate it.

The Committee disagrees with Premier Campbell that the BCSPCA is just a private body. This is the first time a Government department , committee or representative has called the BCSPCA what it is-- an "anomaly" that requires attention.

This has been a long road . All of you and days like this make it all worth it. Thanks for all of your support ! We will keep you in the loop.
