Animal Advocates Watchdog

Does a humane education program, specifically geared for media, exist?

If such a course does exist, every CBC executive and station manager should enroll in one immediately. One of my theories is that CBC is trying to shed its image as a leftist/liberal media organization and are leaning hard the other way to seem reasonable to hunters and trappers, the food and beverage industry (promoting alcohol, meat and dairy consumption - 'food porn').

Late last year one such story by CBC Yukon Radio 'went national' (CBC National news World at 6), a story about Canadian rock star Sam Roberts being attracted to the Yukon by a youth group who had a limited budget but who promised to treat him and his band members to 'Yukon beer, wild game meat and dog mushing,' were he to agree to play a concert in Whitehorse.

I heard the interview by CBC morning radio show host Sandi Coleman (a huge Yukon Quest and dog mushing industry fanatic) with Sam Roberts and he appeared on radio to be somewhat embarrassed and alarmed by his interviewer's rabid attempt to get a response out of him about how excited he was to be coming to the Yukon for the dog mushing aspect of the promotional package.

I was relieved that Mr. Roberts, who is well known as a supporter of social activism in his music and deeds, diplomatically handled the interview by saying that he was more motivated to agree to play the concert by the enthusiasm of the youth group [rather than the beer/meat/dog mushing].

We actually could use a full-time media watchdog for CBC Yukon and CBC North to document all the animal cruelty and exploitation that they support. It has long ago gotten painful to listen to the local CBC. I mostly listen in order to hear what daily blunder their announcers and reporters will make regarding animal issues, than for information and news (lots of mindless crap to endure).

Thanks for writing the letter, Judy. Hope it will serve to 'pee on their cornflakes,' over the Easter weekend.
