An unlicensed pit bull was seized by animal control officers Sunday afternoon after an unprovoked attack on a man walking in the 800-block of Esquimalt Road, east of Head Street.

The man needed medical attention for four puncture wounds to his arm.

Victoria police said the attack occurred about 3:30 p.m. when a woman was having trouble controlling her pit bull, which was on a retractable leash that was not retracting properly. The man happened to be walking by and was set upon by the dog.

Animal control staff are conducting an investigation into the incident.
