Kunekune pigs bred for pets in Britain
23 March 2006

A British farmer is exploiting the genetics of New Zealand's kunekune
pigs to develop pocket-sized piglets as pets.

Breeder Chris Murray's first five piglets – bred to only reach half
the size of an average pig at maturity – created a stir at his farm in
Devon, England, this week.

Mr Murray has named them Pennywell miniatures, after his farm, and
said the mini pigs won't get any bigger than a lap dog, NBC reported.

Mr Murray said they had good temperaments and were naturally clean, so
made nice pets. It took him six years to produce the breeding line.

Kunekune pigs are thought to have been brought to New Zealand by
whalers, in the 1800s.
