TORONTO -- Supporters of a desk-bound animal cruelty investigator protested outside the Toronto Humane Society yesterday in a bid to have him returned to frontline duty fighting for animals.

More than 20 animal lovers were at the society's office in an effort to have Tre Smith returned to conducting investigations.

Smith was transferred to pushing paper after rescuing Cyrus, a Rottweiler, from a heated car earlier this month and handcuffing the dog's owner, who was allegedly assaulted by witnesses.

Ontario SPCA chief Inspector Hugh Coghill said Smith had failed to write a report on the incident for his bosses.

"We unfortunately had no choice but to suspend his status ... and arrange an independent review," Coghill said. "That review is currently in progress."
