On October 2nd, Ms Chortyk replied to me:

"Sadly, the case of the cats in Comox did involved critically ill cats, due to overcrowding. They were euthanized on the recommendation of veterinary staff to relieve them of their suffering. It is highly unusual that we would have that many sick cats in a shelter."
