Dog euthanized after attack

A dog that broke free of its leash and killed another dog Saturday has been put down, according to Andrea McDonald, acting manager of the Coquitlam Animal Shelter.

"It was just kind of a random incident," McDonald said Tuesday. "A dog got away from its owner off the property and there was a dog killed. I don't have any of the details on it, but the owners decided to have the dog put down."

The Maillardville owner of the dog that was killed could not be reached for comment.

A Vancouver radio station reported that the owner of the attacking dog - which it identified as a pit bull - is not facing charges, because the animal was leashed.

"It could be any type of dog," McDonald said of the attack. "It may have had some pit bull in it, but I'm not even sure that it was a purebred pit bull or anything like that. I think sometimes people just kind of attach it with a pit bull, but these types of incidents can happen with any type of dog."

McDonald said the shelter investigated after receiving a complaint from the owner of the dog that was killed.

"We have no record of any prior incidents with that dog," she said of the animal that was euthanized.
