SPCA will charge the Aldergrove Zoo with cruelty over Hazina the Hippo.
Better late than never. But the PCA Act hasn't changed in ten years so why did the SPCA wait so long to act?
This story will be big in the media. Maybe not as big as the SPCA's competition garnered over Tina the elephant at the same zoo two years ago. Vancouver Humane Society led the fight to free Tina and in criticizing the way the zoo kept Hazina. Zoos in BC inflict the most brutal distress on animals and have for a hundred years; and for a hundred years the SPCA kept its head down. http://animaladvocates.com/cgi-bin/newsroom.pl/read/10215
It's sad to say, but every time the SPCA takes action after other, competing groups, have slogged away for years in the trenches, there is the perception that the SPCA is doing damage control. How many SPCA donors told it that they were disturbed that it wasn't doing enough or anything about the Aldergrove Zoo or the Cloverdale Rodeo, another of Vancouver Humane Society's big issues that it has worked so hard on for so long?
