Caring for ferals on the North Shore in a humane way

It's amazing what a small group of dedicated individuals can do. What has been done for the cats on the Sunshine Coast is truly remarkable.

Pacific Animal Foundation, along with several other groups, have implemented a practice of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) on the North Shore since the mid-1990's. We have covered the area all the way from Lions Bay to Deep Cove and during this time have spayed and neutered well over 2000 feral cats. As well, we have socialized and adopted hundreds of feral kittens.

TNR is a humane solution and it has been proven to work. We receive far fewer calls for help nowadays and several veterinarians, who assist our organization, have also indicated that the number of people asking for help with feral cats and kittens has substantially decreased. Neighbourhoods no longer have exploding kitten populations and volunteers and citizens have banded together to feed and look after area cats. Residents are now happy and relieved that the situation has been addressed in a caring and humane way.

Neighbourhoods and veterinarians have shown both cooperation and continued support for this program.

The contrast between what the SPCA has achieved in reducing the cat population and what the little group in Gibsons has achieved is startling
