It's naive to believe Randolph

Supply and demand. I think this is wonderful for dogs getting homes. Small breeds are more popular. Edmonton Humane Society is "selling" more dogs. Hopefully this will help the local dogs sitting in the shelter find homes.

I have to wonder though, if the dogs are selling that fast, if how thoroughly the EHS is checking into the homes they are selling these dogs to.

I wonder how many of the people who bought one of the dogs was actually looking to get a dog but the story of "rescued U.S. dogs" made them become popular. The dogs could end up in bad, if not worse, situations.

"Randolph said having small, popular dogs at the shelter will help cut down on puppy mills by giving people a reliable source to buy dogs."

Reliable or not, this sounds much like a broker who supplies and sells dogs. And being a "reliable source" sounds like the EHS plans to get into the business full time. Alberta is notorious for its puppymills, many of them supplying resellers in BC, and it's naive to believe Randolph when she says that taking a few sellable dogs from the States will make a dent in the suppliers either Alberta or the States. This is about money, same as it is with the puppymillers. There are more than enough homeless big dogs and mutts in Alberta to fill the EHS a hundred times over. Why doesn't it take dogs from some of the many high-kill pounds in Alberta?

There is always two sides. I don't like to see any animals die at the hands of humans who have created this problem. But for a shelter whose focus is to help animals, adopt them out, to use the term "source to buy dogs" doesn't sit well with me.
