I know EXACTLY what AAS is saying here. I find it absolutely unbelievable that the public can be so gullible to feel so awful for these animals being dumped and not question the SPCA. Of course, I feel awful for these animals, but my first questions are to the SPCA for having a huge hand in creating this mess.
Why is there no breeding by-law to inhibit the casual breeding of dogs? Why does the SPCA not spay and neuter every animal at EVERY SPCA before they leave the premises? I picked up a mom and kittens off the side of the road and out of my own pocket, spayed and neutered everyone recently. Every person who has done animal rescue does something like this...no one would allow an unfixed animal to be adopted out who does animal rescue.
And I know SPCA volunteers who often work tirelessly would raise money for this. So, where the heck does all this money go?
And why does the SPCA take everything in? Although this is controversial as people will worry about where the animal might end up should the SPCA not take an animal in, on the whole the SPCA still needs to make the public responsible.
And I will tell you that it is normal, every day, middle class people who dump pets. We are a disposable society. To continue to euthanize and 'cry' about it to the media instead of taking steps to be proactive about pet overpopulation disgusts me. I've only volunteered for a little while at the SPCA and the Vancouver city pound and came to many various conclusions on how to curb pet overpopulation. So, why hasn't the SPCA figured this out?
