This post is in response to the issue of the SPCA taking dead bodies to the dump at http://www.animaladvocates.com/cgi-bin/newsroom.pl/read/6686
The indignities thing bothered me alot when I worked for awhile at the [branch name removed]. There was some mean joking about the animals especially about the ones they knew they would probably have to put down. There were a lot of other things that bothered me too....like staff who wouldn't help anyone if they had one minute of lunchtime left. Once a volunteer wanted to walk a dog that hadn't been out for days and the staff person with the key wouldn't even give it to her because he was still on lunch. I was joked meanly about too for walking dogs on my lunch hour and for cleaning cat litter boxes before I went home, even if it meant I stayed a bit late, none of the others liked me doing anything extra for the animals. I really thought I was going to be able to help the animals by working at the SPCA but I can do much more on my own which I am doing now. Some of the staff weren't as bad as others, but none of them seemed to be there because they loved animals the way I do.
The indignities were a real concern for me...I sort of felt I was part of it because the only ones at the SPCA with dignity were the animals...everyone of them. The humans were shameful and I quit because I didn't want to feel ashamed anymore. The jokes about the dump weren't the worst, but they bothered me too.
