Vernon SPCA Left a Cat up a Pole to Suffer in the Heat

High-Wire Act Ends Safely

A cat's heartbreaking ordeal is finally over after surviving four days stuck on a hydro line in Coldstream.

Ed Peters of BC Hydro came to the rescue of the traumatized cat Thursday. Peters tried to coerce the tired cat over to the safety of the bucket of his lift truck, but before he could grab the cat it climbed backwards down the pole.

People in the Creekside Road neighbourhood were very concerned about the pet and tried to encourage it down by putting food and water at the base of the pole - but nothing seemed to work.

Giselle White was very worried that the cat would die because it was getting dehydrated in the hot sun and was panting, looking groggy, and even being pecked at by birds.

White and some other residents in the area called the SPCA, Telus, the BC Hydro 1-800 number and the fire department asking for assistance - but no one would help.

According to White, the SPCA kept saying the cat would come down when it got hungry enough, but after four days in the hot sun the residents started to question that theory.

"I am not putting anyone down but it is just so sad to see it suffer, it is not humane, and someone needs to help", said White of the situation before the local BC Hydro office offered to help.
