Society will take the steps necessary to protect itself and its children

I am in favour of banning Pit bulls, their ownership and breeding...if Pit bull defenders won't breed out the traits that were bred into pit bulls to make them fighters.

I am not in favour of killing existing Pit bulls. But society will take the steps necessary to protect itself and its children, that is a given. I don't see any evidence that Pit bull owners can be made to behave responsibly, nor that any society will spend the huge sums of money to protect itself through education, or through laws that attempt to make owners behave responsibly. That argument ensures, because of its ineffectiveness, that there will be more victims, and most will be children.

When society perceived that it was a grave danger to permit people to carry hand guns, carrying handguns was outlawed. No one argued that society ought to "make gun carriers behave responsibly" or that education was the answer. Pit bulls will be controlled effectively, no matter what dog-lovers want.

I have simply looked at the way society works to protect itself in other instances of real danger, and I believe that it will do the same in the case of Pit bulls. What will happen with other breeds that are perceived to be dangerous will be the same, if the breeders and lovers of the breed do nothing to breed out the traits that make their breed dangerous.

I have never met a dog I don't like, and I have helped many Pit bulls and Pit bull crosses.

But I refuse to deny that Pit bulls are no more inherently dangerous than other breeds. They are the result of deliberate genetic selection for traits that make them highly dangerous as a breed.

A Pit bull that is never dangerous is not acting true to its breeding. There are many individual Pit bulls that do not act true to their breeding just as there are hounds that won't track and collies that won't herd, but to deny the purpose of the breed is illogical and society will finally, and rightly, ignore the irrational arguments that fly in the face of the obvious truth.

Pit bull lovers and defenders - start to breed out the dangerous traits if you want to honestly protect your breed from disappearing.
