I have my story to add to this.... a couple of years ago I found a tiny, fluffy bit of a dog running around Marine Drive in North Vancouver, almost being run over. I grabbed it and found that it was matted, thin, and couldn't walk properly. No one looked for it at the pound, no one advertised. So I took it to my vet and found out that it's hip had been broken and never fixed and it was now permanently lame. I did all I could to fix it up and put an ad in the paper. (I know better now and will not do that again.)
Weeks later the owners came to claim the dog. They explained that they were Native Dancers and were on tour a lot and when they went away they left this seven pound dog in the yard and asked friends to go feed it, but the friends "must have forgot", and "I guess he got out to look for food".
As for the hip - "Yeah, we noticed he walked funny one day, someone must have kicked him."
I offered to dog sit him everytime they went away - for free. The next time they went on tour they gave him to me and they never bothered to phone me again.
I don't believe any of the spiritual superiority and respect for animals garbage either. No one does except some poor, dozy Natives. But God help you if you say so! There is a whole "Natives are superior" business that is being run for their own benefit by politicians, and lawyers, and the men who rule the reserves like third world, tribal back-waters.
