We are asked - what about German shepherds, what about Rottweilers?

We are asked, What about German shepherds - they are also high on the fatal bites list?

German shepherds are protection dogs and not nearly the danger that fighting dogs are. Protection dogs can be well-socialized. They are bred to follow orders, not to attack without provocation and hold on to the death. They do not have a high prey drive as do fighting dogs, especially Pit bulls.

What about Rottweilers - they are also high on the fatal attacks list?

Again, Rottweilers are bred for protection, not fighting and do not have a high prey drive.

Both German shepherds and Rottweilers are used as guard dogs because of the "protection" traits and because of their size. They are frequently "made" dangerous. But they are not "born" dangerous. Laws against using dogs as guards, and against the leaving of dogs in yards, would fix that.

From our own observations, made daily at dog parks, we put the population of German shepherds and crosses at close to one hundred times as many as Pit bulls or obvious Pit bull crosses. We would estimate that Rottweilers are 25 to 35 times as prevalent as Pit bulls.

It then should follow, that if Pit bulls are no more dangerous than German shepherds or Rottweilers as Pit bull defenders insist, that fatal attacks by German shepherds and Rottweilers ought to be from 25 to one hundred times greater than by Pit bulls.

Not one single authoritative list shows that. Even though Pit bulls represent a tiny fraction of dogs in the population, they are responsible for very high numbers of the most serious and/or fatal attacks.
