The SPCA refers in this story to a cockfighting bust it made in 1998. AAS knows a bit about this story that adds some interest.

We were phoned shortly after the "bust" by a Phillipino woman who todl us that she was mad because she had reported the place to the SPCA a month before and it had done nothing.

In typical SPCA fashion, the SPCA does little or nothing, unless there is publicity to hog, and then they are all over the media, taking credit.

Under big colour photos of Brian "I've killed 50 thousand animals in my day" Nelson holding a hapless cock in his arms, the Province began its story with this:

39 Arrests in B.C. cockfighting bust

Seized birds put down by Burnaby SPCA after raid on warehouse

Burnaby RCMP and the SPCA have busted a major cockfighting ring. Responding Saturday evening to a report of one man threatening another with a large plank, police happened upon a cock fighting arena near Marine Way when they knocked on the door of a Burnaby home.
The SPCA was called in and confiscated 72 cocks and a variety of cockfighting paraphernalia. “It’s a very nasty business,” said Nelson, as he inspected on of dozens of lethal 10- centimeter- long steel spurs seized at the scene. “It’s a blood sport, and the loser usually dies. In the cockerel world, the tough guy gets to mate the females."

The truth is that the RCMP stumbled across this cockfighting ring and called the SPCA to impound all the birds. The SPCA killed all but one to use as evidence.

Is that animal welfare or animal control?
