Animal Advocates Watchdog

Hello, Colleen,

PetPharm is a Canadian company, so all the prices are in Canadian dollars.

There are so many really costly mark-ups on veterinary supplies in BC. Here many vets charge $30 and up for a litre of lactated ringers (fluids) for cats or dogs - even if you administer them at home. I found out where to get them for $3.65 in Calgary, no prescription necessary, so if anybody uses them I can provide further details. Stat Healthcare ships them by the case along with the necessary needles and tubing. I have ordered them for animal groups locally. So many feral cats and kittens need fluids when they first come into shelter.

I suppose that getting supplies at reasonable prices comes under the animal advocacy mandate! I know the SPCA gets special rates (as they should), but it's the small groups who are really strapped for cash. One group was getting a special deal at $18 a litre for fluids before I moved here two years ago! A local vet has now agreed to match the Calgary price.

It pays to shop around.

Jean
