Just a few more bits of misinformation from the BC SPCA…..

“The SPCA is not a government-funded agency”. The SPCA is in fact partially funded by the government – it receives gaming revenue from the provincial government every year.

“While the SPCA has made major strides towards spaying and neutering all of the animals leaving its shelters…”. All the rescues groups that I know of spay and neuter ALL their animals before adoption and these are rescues that operate on a shoestring budget. Since the SPCA is not doing the same, they are in fact contributing to the problem of over population. The cost for caring for the animals will always exceed the resources available UNTIL the SPCA gets a handle on overpopulation in this province.

“Today the BC SPCA has achieved one of the lowest euthanasia rates anywhere in North America with virtually no adoptable animals euthanized in urban centers”. Talk about misinformation - “adoptable” means they use CAMP to kill healthy animals that might need extra help and then they base their statistics on it. The “unadoptable” animals that are killed fall off the face of the earth – there are no statistics to show the true picture of exactly how many animals are killed. Then the statement is further qualified with “urban”. This means that the rural areas in this province continue to be a killing field for the animals.

“The SPCA has spent millions of dollars on spay and neuter programs and decades of hard-hitting humane education messages…”. Where are the hard hitting humane education messages? Is Mr. Daniell referring to the cutesy ads that were aired in September of this year and the adoption contest that was held between the branches at the same time?

“The society seized more than 1,300 animals from dangerous situations, including hundreds of dogs rescued during a province-wide crackdown on puppy mills”. And how many of these animals were returned to the hell that they came from? How many of these animals went through the SPCA system, only to be killed in the name of CAMP? How many of the Beaverdell dogs actually found a home? How many convictions were there?

“Last year alone, 30,000 homeless and abandoned animals would not have received emergency medical treatment and shelter until a new loving family could be found for them….”. Could this be because the BC SPCA allows unlimited surrender? And what about all the animals that they adopted out WITHOUT proper veterinary care (like Goldie, Toby, Bonnie, Rascal and Ginger from the Victoria SPCA)?

“Thousands of school children would have not been taught the importance of respecting and caring for animals….”. To my knowledge, there has never been any proper humane education program presented in any school in Victoria.

“It’s easy to take shots at the SPCA….”. I don’t take “shots” at the SPCA. Any concerns that I present to the SPCA are based on FACTS and I expect these concerns to be taken seriously.

I do not want the BC SPCA to go away – I want it to be strong, organized and transparent – an organization that I can trust to have the animals’ best interests at heart. Until they live up to these expectations, I will remain an outspoken critic of the BC SPCA.

Craig Daniell: SPCA URGES AN END AMONG ANIMAL TO BACKBITING ACTIVISTS: Vancouver Sun
Craig Daniell: "The same critics should also consider what life would be like for animals in British Columbia without the SPCA"
What will it take to get rid of the critics?
Please don't take it as 'throwing stones', or 'snapping and snarling'
If the SPCA was operating properly we would not need animal activist groups
Mr. Daniell implies that the SPCA has rehabilitated these wild creatures, which is simply not true
