Hi all,
I haven't had a chance to read all the messages on this thread yet, but what caught my eye is the statement that we need to stop the breeding of horses. My response: exactly! And how does one make sure that the breeding rate of horses in this country might decrease appreciably? Breathing down the necks of breeders won't do it. Public education, eventually, may help. But what is the big picture here? As always, create a situation where people become accountable. With a ban on horse slaughter, anyone indulging in irresponsible breeding practices will have to think twice. Let's look to the future, not play into the hands of industry by panicking over what will happen to the horses who are not now being slaughtered. Please take the time to peruse our website: www.defendhorsescanada.org . You will find the writings of John Hettinger and John Holland, both of whom have analyzed the situation and have drawn the same conclusions: rampant breeding will be curtailed when the slaughter option no longer exists. And don't forget that any federal law passed in the U.S. or Canada should include "transport to slaughter". That way, the horses will stay in the country.
Hope that helps to clarify,
Sinikka
