Q & A with the Parksville SPCA about feral cats

January 24, 2008

I phoned the Parksville SPCA to tell them about a feral cat in my neighbourhood:

Q: Would they loan me a trap?
A: No, they don't have traps, I'd have to get my own.

Q: What would I do when I caught it?
A: Bring it to them.

Q: Would they 'fix' it?
A: No. If it is truly feral it wouldn't be adoptable.

Q: What would they do with it then?
A: They'd euthenize it. It could be carrying diseases that would spread to all the cat populations. If it were a kitten, they might be able to work with it to get it adoptable.

Q: What if I caught it and had it fixed? Can I bring it to them then?
A: No, if it is truly feral, it could never be adopted. They'd just euthenize it.

From personal experience, I know that at least one claim by Craig Daniell is untrue

I don't know any no-kill group that would kill 131 cats for illness or aggression in ten months *LINK*

Animal Advocates Society has questioned the veracity of many SPCA statements made for many years
Questions about conflicts of SPCA mandates: Who should be killing animals?
Why has the SPCA taken the position that it has a duty to protect the public from "aggressive" cats?
Is the SPCA ever going to get it right???
