Gail Moerkerken, its founder and president, has kept Big Heart's promise to the peoples and the companion animals on BC's reserves with this first collaborative clinic. Gail's organizing skills, honed by 25 years facilitating employment and career choice seminars and teaching conflict resolution for clients such as BC Tel, combined with her compassion for suffering animals, produced this historic first for Reserve animals in BC.
Gail began rescuing and rehabilitating dogs and cats from First Nations reserves in the late 1990s. In 2002, she created Big Heart Rescue Society with people who had been her rescue partners as directors.
Gail wasn't long in putting together Big Heart's first Healthy Animal Clinic at the Bella Bella reserve. Others followed at the Denny Island, Klemtu, and Kuper Island reserves.
Please go look at Big Heart Rescue's web site to see for yourself how real animal welfare, education, population and disease control, and rescue when needed, is done for the pets of First Nations people.
