Lucky Whisky! I have fostered many rescued dogs that haven't had exposure to the outside world or had any freedom to run. When they are given that, they run back with a smile on their face as if to say thank you. I hike a group of dogs and we go up a mountain. Dogs need the freedom to run and stimulate their senses in a natural, outdoor and safe environment. Dogs must be given the opportunity to be dogs. It is our responsibility to meet their daily needs. Off leash exercised dogs are much more balanced as their energy tank is emptied. Many dog owners think that leash walking around the neighbourhood is sufficient. I have to say that walking the same concrete is like reading the same newspaper every day - how boring would that be for us? I often hear dog owners say "My dog is so hyper". Dogs are hyper because they can't run and empty their energy tanks. Dogs that dig, chew and get into trouble are most often bored out of their minds and they have to find something to get into. It is not the dog's fault - it is ours for not giving them what they need. My dogs are never leashed walked. They are loaded into the car and driven to a safe off leash area. Coyotes and wolves didn't come with leashes attached. Don't get me wrong, there are circumstances when you must use a leash to keep your dog safe. I am not advocating never using leashes so please don't misinterpret what I'm trying to say.
