Subject: RE: The welfare of Exotic Animals and Others

Thank you for your e-mail, the point that I was trying to get across was that there are scores of exotic animals that are out there that are unregulated because there is no legislation that specifically governs the keeping or registration of exotic animals. As a result the BC SPCA must rely on the information provided to it by the public. Upon receiving complaints the Society's Special Provincial Constables will investigate and act within the confines of the legislation we do enforce namely the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Criminal Code. As I am sure you are aware the Society conducts cruelty investigations on behalf of the Province with minimal resources allocated by the Provincial Government and unfortunately there are times when it appears that the Society does not appear to act as quickly as some would like.

In 2005 BC SPCA Special Provincial Constables executed 72 Search warrants and removed 405 animals and recommended charges in 40 cases

To date in 2006 they have executed 46 warrants and removed 553 animals and have recommended charges in 23 cases.

"We didn't know" is an excuse that is used repeatedly by the SPCA
It is the BC SPCA's business to know about cruelty to animals
