I believe that if an animal is sick and there's no hope for it, then it should be mercifully put to sleep. If they are old then let them die of old age...gracefully, and if they are injured then they should be cared for and allowed to live out the rest of their lives. Slaughtering animals for food in my estimation is wrong because it is taking the life of a being. It's just plain murder.
