It is apparant in this day and age that humans no longer depend on dogs to pull sleds from A to B in order for humans to survive. At one point humans in extreme northern latitudes DID depend on this for survival. Not that it was morally right then, but that was Darwinian evolutionary survival of the fittest (fittest of brain, or smartest that is).But now we have GMC and Ford to shuttle us from A to B. Shuttling by dog is relegated to mere sport.
Sport is not essential to survival. Before the birth of media, sport was pure entertainment. Now, in our complacent and media-pillaged lives, sport is profitable entertainment, mesmerizing the masses, and generously padding the bank accounts of the wiley handful of exploitive businesspeople who "own" the athletes, whether human or animal. (And yes, this too would be 'survival of the fittest', though I'm not sure what Darwin's thoughts would be on the moral abyss created by the financial gain type of "survival". Anyone read Origin of the Species?)
Long point short: No one being or species has any right to own another being or species or force another being or species to bend to its will for any reason. There was a time when dogsledding meant survival of the fittest. But today it is just exploitation.
