Barry Penner, Environment Minister
Ban on Exotic/Wild Animals
Dear Sirs,
I am asking that the government enact province-wide regulations prohibiting the keeping and sale of exotic animals.
The accidental death of Tanya Dumstrey-Soos at Siberian Magic, a private zoo outside of 100 Mile House, highlights the need for immediate action. Wild animals, such as big cats, do not belong in captivity. They are wild.
The increasing consumer market for exotics, such as Siberian tigers, puts not only the animal but the public at risk as well. Most are kept in deplorable conditions by people who want them as a novelty item or who exploit them for financial gain. Taken out of a natural environment and forced to exist in inappropriate conditions (penned up) is against what nature intended for these magnificent creatures. They will be affected both physically and psychologically, and unpredictable behaviour could well be a response to their "living" quarters.
Washington State recently signed the "Dangerous Wild Animal Bill " into law, which prohibits the private possession/ownership of wild animals such as bears and tigers. http://www.api4animals.org/press?p=1207&more=1
For the benefit of both public safety and animal welfare, I hope this matter is acted upon.
Sincerely,
Carmina Gooch, Director
