Woman dies after dog attack

One of two women attacked by pit bulls at the Dan Ryan Woods on Sunday morning died of her injuries Sunday night, according to Cook County Forest Preserve police.

The victim was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as 48-year-old Anna Cieslewicz of Evergreen Park.

Cieslewicz was jogging in the forest preserve near 95th and Western when she was attacked by two pit bulls. She had traumatic bite wounds on her head, torso, arms and legs, according to Cook County Forest Preserve police spokesman Steve Mayberry.

Forest preserve police were first called to Advocate Christ Medical Center to investigate a separate attack on a 46-year-old woman who also was jogging in the preserve.

That woman was transferred in serious condition from Advocate Christ to another hospital Sunday night, officials said.

When officers returned to the scene to investigate, they found Cieslewicz. A forest preserve officer shot one of the dogs, which made threatening moves toward him, Mayberry said.

Another dog believed to be involved in the attacks was shot and killed by Chicago police near 73rd and Carpenter.

Authorities think the women were not running together.

Mayberry said officers were hoping someone with information about the dogs' owners would contact them.

The dogs were not wearing tags, he said.

"These dogs had no identifying features that would make it easy to identify their owners,'' Mayberry said. ''We have two deceased dogs but no real way of identifying their owners, barring someone coming forward.''
