BC SPCA doesn't hesitate to define a puppymill *LINK*

"What is a puppy mill?

A puppy mill is a high-volume, substandard dog-breeding facility that puts profit before animal health and welfare.

The adult dogs used as breeding
stock live out their entire lives
either in cramped, filthy crates in
which they can barely turn around,
or in filthy, barren kennels. Starting
as young as four months old, the
females are bred during every heat,
resulting in two litters a year until
they can no longer produce enough
puppies to make keeping them
worthwhile. Often, the crates are
stacked on top of each other in an
unheated and unventilated barn or
shed. The animals have no access
to natural sunlight and spend their
lives standing in their own feces and
urine."
