Marshall Jones,
Kelowna Capital News

Dear Mr. Jones,

Your column of Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, " Some animals are not fit for human co-habitation" left me angry and frustrated at your unwillingness to see and accurately record the other side of this debacle.
You see, I am one of what you referred to as 'rabid" animal rights people. I stood shoulder to shoulder with other animal rights people at the candlelight vigil to remember the Beaverdell dogs, and I was proud to be a part of such a respectful, intelligent group.
I resent your implications that my animal welfare work is all about "money and legitimacy" You have never visited my animal sanctuary or spent a night trapping feral cats. When was the last time you were there helping me rescue abused and neglected livestock? Animal groups in the Okanagan are in the "trenches" on a daily basis, working tirelessly and spending their own money trying to make the world a better place for people and animals. By labelling us with such sensationalistic comments, you are guilty of doing exactly what you are accusing us of doing to the SPCA.
As a journalist, you should also realize that if all these animal groups are speaking out so strongly , then despite the gossip and innuendo, there must be a truthful basis for what is being said. We are not perfect; but neither is the SPCA.
In closing I respectfully suggest that you shouldn't judge us until you've walked a mile in our shoes. You could learn a lot about respect and compassion.
Sincerely,
Mandy Rawson
P.S. If you ever want to come to the sanctuary and help me medicate feral cats, you are always welcome. (Just be sure to wear your thickest gloves!)
