Animal Advocates Watchdog

In Response To: Cleo was one naughty dog ()

For me this passage says it all:
"These days, busy people who want a dog often expect the animal will automatically obey every command. If the dog is poorly behaved, it can shatter an otherwise positive dog-owning experience and force families to face that awful
decision."
Dogs don't make a conscious decision to be "naughty". "Poorly behaved" is the
result of what they have learned, or what they have not been taught.
So often, people get a dog just because they want one, with little regard to what the dog needs and the changes that they will have to make in their lifestyle in order to accommodate those needs.
I own a beagle, an unrepentant food thief, so all food in my house is in high cupboards, all lower cupboards and the garbage are locked and food is never left on counters. The adaptation
is my responsibility.
Puppies have so much to learn, yet people plunk them in a crate and go off to work, then are dismayed when the pup takes so long to learn anything.
So many dogs are under exercised, have no mental stimulation and far too little socialization to the outside (and inside)world.
Much more careful consideration is in order when people get the urge to own a dog.
