Surrey SPCA manager Kim Archibald advocates killing *LINK*

I listened to the Kim Archibald segment on the Animal Wellness Show. The link is below, I urge you to listen for yourselves.

During the interview, Kim Archibald admits that the SPCA doesn't have the resources to deal with all of the dogs in their care. She admits that some facilities, such as Prince George and Surrey, are so overcrowded that dogs and cats are killed after succumbing to disease or psychological distress. I have to wonder, why is the SPCA going after AAS when their own employees level such criticism at them?

Regarding Cheech, Archibald says that she doesn't trust Amanda Muir's judgment of Cheech's temperament, because Muir was previously attacked by a rottweiler in the line of duty. One would think that Muir, due to her experience, would be in a unique position to compare the aggressiveness of the two animals.

The most disturbing series of statements, scattered throughout her rambling chat with the host, concern her recognition of the damage to the SPCA caused by the Cheech affair. Archibald states that one dog (Cheech) is not the issue, on that we agree. But she goes on to say that resources spent on dogs like Cheech, even volunteer time, steal from more deserving dogs. She said that when marginal dogs are sold by the SPCA, every person that encounters such a "reject pound dog" will be dissuaded from getting their next dog from a shelter. She goes on to say that "... every goldenpoo, labradoodle, cockapoo puppy miller in the world loves when that happens ...." Such sweeping conjecture takes one's breath away.

In a nutshell, here is what I get from Archibald's interview:

1. The SPCA still kills animals due to overcrowding;
2. Volunteers who try to rehabilitate dogs are stealing resources from the SPCA; and
3. Puppy millers profit unless the SPCA kills dogs.

All of Archibald's arguments boil down to this, that she believes it is the SPCA's role to kill the province's surplus animals. Nowhere in Archibald's interview does she exhibit a glimmer of comprehension that there would be more resources available, per animal, if the SPCA simply reversed its open surrender policy.
