AAS is often asked by people if they should discontinue donating to the SPCA *LINK* *PIC*

Of course we answer that that is up to them, and that we don't wish them to stop donating to the SPCA and start donating to us. We have said repeatedly that we want a financially strong SPCA so that it has the funds to prevent cruelty and practice real animal welfare...and we mean it.

But unbidden we get letters like this one..

Dear AAS, I'd like to start making monthly donations to you. I have just discontinued my monthly donations to the SPCA because they, apparently, are suing your organization. Don't they have better things to do with my money???

They have many better things to do with donator's money in most people's opinions, but clearly not in theirs. They could have saved the life of Bojangles for one, instead of letting him die slowly and painfully in one of their crummy cement cells.

Bojangles is only one of thousands. While the SPCA cries poor all the time, it is actually able to spend a hundred thousand dollars on lawyers to silence people who criticize them for their self-serving priorities, thereby proving that their priorities are self-serving.

This was just posted above, but it deserves to be posted again...

If Only we Could Ask Those it Claims to Speak For...

Can or Should the BC SPCA be saved?

I'd like to ask Bojangles, who ruptured his bladder and was killed at the Quesnel SPCA while waiting for money to fix his painful broken bones.

I'd like to ask the Surrey Six, who were killed at the Surrey SPCA because they had kennel cough.

I'd like to ask Dot, who escaped the Surry SPCA with her life, but who left with painful infected eyes that had not been so much as wiped, and a urine soaked coat of matted hair.

I'd like to ask Felicity, who contracted Calicivirus in the SPCA, and who lost so much weight, and became so ill she almost died.

I'd like to ask Jasper, who sat emaciated in an SPCA cage for a week with no vet care - Jasper, who was so far gone by the time he was rescued from the SPCA that he hadn't the strength left to make it, and had to be euthanized. At least he didn't die alone in his SPCA cage.

I'd like to ask Scruffy, who the Vernon SPCA sold back to a neglectful owner, along with one of her pups, to be bred again, and neglected again, despite the fact that she had a decent home waiting to adopt her and have her spayed and get her healthy again.

I'd like to ask Brenda and Tamra, who were exploited by the SPCA for donations, and who were killed for not being able to overcome their fear quickly enough for the SPCA's liking, and again, who had many qualified homes waiting and wanting to adopt them. Brenda and Tamra were frightened little puppy mill dogs - their deaths are especially unforgivable.

I'd like to ask all the Beaverdell dogs, who were seized and exploited for donations in the media, and who were then incarcerated for almost a year in an SPCA facility, not neutered, until they started to go mad, and were then killed by the masses - 34 out of 46 killed.

I'd like to ask every dog, cat, rabbit, rodent, and bird, imprisoned in an SPCA cage today, awaiting an unknown fate at the hands of those who claim to be speaking for them, how comfortable they are about their futures right now.

A cruel ending for a nice old dog....

Can or should the BC SPCA be saved from itself?
I too wonder, like many others if the SPCA needs such a major overhaul that it perhaps can't be done
Until the management of the BC SPCA, an organization that is fuelled by donor dollars and provincial funding, is truly proactive in managing a responsible and ethical business

I agree wholeheartedly that a strong SPCA is what's needed. My experience with the BCSPCA goes back to approximately 1986, when I became involved with the Horse Protection Society of BC
We are really making a difference for these cats, not just sweeping the problem of abandoned cats under the carpet by killing them all
The Fraser Valley Humane Society here in Mission is piloting a programme to have all cats neutered or spayed
I personally do not believe the SPCA should be saved in it's present form
I want to know why does the SPCA keeps saying that they have this great relationship with so many dog rescue groups
Does the SPCA say that snake charming is science?
Is this just Utopia? Or can we really make it work?

Being in the media, I can see that the SPCA has lost some ground

If the members do actually want change then they CAN make it happen through the existing system!
