Animal Advocates Watchdog

Self-serving SPCA, trainers, behaviourists, and politicians

I began doing animal welfare work over ten years ago, and quickly discovered that the BC SPCA was a huge player in the multi-billion dollar pet-disposal industry while disguised as an animal welfare organization. I realized that I could only relieve the suffering of a few dogs and cats a year doing "rescue" work but as long as the SPCA's real agenda went undetected, the suffering would go on long after I and the ten thousand other animal loving women who do rescue work, were gone. So I set out to make change - to force the SPCA to reform and do real animal welfare and real prevention of cruelty. Hence the AAS web site and the Supreme Court defamation suit the SPCA is trying to silence us with.

I also discovered that a hurdle just as big to overcome were animal-lovers themselves, especially all the "rescue angels". Almost no one can accept that they are one of the biggest stumbling blocks to real pet welfare because they cover up what the animal welfare industry does (in BC, that is largely the SPCA) so that they can "heroically" rescue the occasional cat or dog of their "favourite" breed, from an SPCA. Their silence betrays hundreds of other animals.

And then there is the ignorance of the average dog-lover, especially Pit bull defenders. It should be clear to a person of even average intelligence that Pit bulls and other "manstopper" breeds of dogs are a growing social problem for which there will be a solution, no matter how loudly they deny the purpose of their favourite breed. By maintaining the lie that their breed is not dangerous, they condemn their breed to short, brutish lives and deaths on the end of chains or at pounds.

The big business BC SPCA was easy to expose in comparison. Once I assembled the facts of the SPCA's business, I could prove that the SPCA was in the pet disposal business with all the attendant deceit.

The SPCA, trainers, and "behaviourists", who don't want to offend their clients and donators by saying that some dog breeds are genetically bad, and the problem is not just bad owners (though it is that too), trot out the "A Pekinese killed a baby once" story and "cocker spaniels bite more" red herrings and cover their reputations and incomes by piously looking so much more humane than that awful dog-hater, Judy Stone.

The SPCA, while saying that it makes no breed distinctions, kills more Pit bulls and Rottweilers in BC than anyone else because it is the biggest player in the pet disposal industry in North America (according to its own P.R.), with 40 branches, and a secret, but very large number of municipal pound contracts. AAS keeps urging politicians to look at this, and then reject the BC SPCA's self-serving misinformation. But being politicians, they're afraid to.

AAS wants an end to all desocializing of all dogs by chaining, penning, guarding, etc, and because we have assisted in the removal of so many from their misery and spent thousands of dollars per dog rehabilitating them, we want an end to this. Dog disposal contractors could very well not want the problem to end as a lot of their income is dependant on animal suffering. We can no longer rescue Pit bulls or Rottweilers. Not even the nice ones. There are no decent homes for Pit bulls and few for Rottweilers.

I care personally about all the Pit bulls, Rottweilers that I cannot save. I will be more disheartened when I start being asked to save 150 lb Pit bull crosses and other manstopper dogs when I can't. And I want to personally sue every craven politician who was too cowardly to pass preventive legislation when the next child is maimed or killed.

The only way I can operate is to say what I know is right and damn the politics. I can't stomach or like or respect the people who do the politically expedient and self-serving thing. Look at the thousands of years of misery that has caused. My operating motto is "Only the truth will set them free". Cribbed and clichéd, but true.
