Proof is in the pudding for new pit bull ban

The Province

Thursday, March 03, 2005

In the right hands, pit bulls can make wonderful pets. But too often, it seems, the wrong people own them.

And recently there have simply been too many savage attacks by pit bulls on humans and other dogs for the authorities to turn a blind eye to them.

Despite cries of canine genocide, the Ontario government has just passed a province-wide ban on the breed. The new law lets current pit bull owners keep their animals, but bars them from getting new ones.

lt's been described as the most sweeping ban of its kind in North America. And only time will tell whether it will help reduce dog maulings.

Pit bull defenders have vowed to go to court to challenge the law. And top lawyer Clayton Ruby has called it a "quick, cheap fix."

However, if it helps fix the problem quickly and cheaply, then it will be an effective one as well.
