Animal Advocates Watchdog

"Little Bugger" update *PIC*

You may remember reading the story about Monty, the little 12lb fluff ball that the SPCA wanted to kill. Well, I am the woman who spent two and a half hours trying to catch this little guy as he ran terrified amongst the traffic. I am also the woman who thought the SPCA was the one to call to help this dog. What a lesson I learned!

After the SPCA took this dog I called daily to see if he had been claimed. When I was told by them that he was so aggressive that they were going to put him down, I was absolutely heartbroken that I had tried to help this dog, but had instead led him to his death. I drove full speed to the SPCA. I was told he was unmanageable, ungroomable, untrainable, and when the staff member asked me "why are you so interested in this little bugger," I knew that they believed he was unlovable too.

Monty was sold to me for $145 dollars, no home check and still unneutered. I could have been a backyard breeder for all the SPCA cared.

To cut a long story short, I had to rescue this dog from the SPCA and that is when I contacted Animal Advocates.

The reason I am writing this after all this time, is because tonight I had the privilege of visiting Monty in his new home. The "ungroomable" little dog was snow white and brushed, a far cry from the muddy, matted urine stained little guy I found. His new Mom has worked miracles with him, teaching this unteachable dog manners, but most of all, teaching him that not all humans will treat him badly and that he is in fact lovable. I watched this unmanageable dog come when his Mom called him and snuggle up beside her waiting for a belly rub.

Yes he can be a grumpy little guy, but so is my Granddad and we haven't put him down. He doesn't like to be picked up? No problem, his Mom doesn't pick him up. He doesn't like his back end touched? No problem, his Mom doesn't touch his back end. I watched as he followed his Mom wherever she went in the house, and when she sat down, he stared up adoringly at her. When he put his paw on her, she excused herself from the conversation to ask her "baby" what he would like. This is truly a match made in heaven and made all the nights I cried myself to sleep thinking about what the SPCA was going to do to him, seem in the distant past.

When I was driving home after visiting Monty, my ten year old was listening to a CD and said, "I want to dedicate this song to Monty." The words said, "It's in the way that you hold me, the way that you touch me, the way that you know me, that's why I want to make you mine."

My ten year old had figured out just what Monty needed, gentleness and understanding, why was it so difficult for the SPCA to figure this out?

So to Monty's new Mom, thank you for giving this special little boy a chance, a new home, so much patience, a lovely new rhinestone collar, and more love that he ever could have imagined. You truly are an angel.

And to Monty, I'm so sorry for taking you to the SPCA, but because of you, my eyes have been opened by the SPCA's own actions. I now volunteer for Animal Advocates and have met so many wonderful people who work so hard at trying to give dogs just like you a better life. I sleep so much better at night now knowing that I am doing something, however small, to help. I make a promise to you "Little Bugger", I will NEVER take another dog to the SPCA. Thank you for teaching me a valuable lesson.

And to the SPCA...what are you going to do? Sue me?

And our favourite - Does the SPCA say that snake charming is science?
Vancouver and Burnaby SPCA manager Mark Takhar says all has changed
Recalling all this is not malice as the SPCA might claim - there is a purpose
The only time we saw the SPCA act principled...
