NRD unfair in its shelter dealings

To the Editor,

I am deeply concerned about the pressure that is being placed on Walker’s Animal Rescue Centre by the Regional District of Nanaimo. For those that are not aware, the centre is a volunteer-based society that cares for many unwanted and injured animals in our community.

Over six months ago, in order to meet the demands of the Regional District, Stephanie Walker opened an adoption office at 55 Victoria Road. Therefore she is not adopting animals from her private home.

Please be aware that the centre is doing everything it can to accommodate the flow of unwanted animals. It is just one family and a few friends that volunteer their time to keep the centre operating, and all of the money that is donated to Walker’s Animal Rescue Centre goes directly to the needs of the animals.

Stephanie and the volunteers are on stand-by 24 hours a day to respond to calls.

This is the best option for people in order to report a situation that has happened late at night or when the other facilities are closed.

The Regional District of Nanaimo will eventually have more problems to deal with if unattended animals are left injured or shot at because they are considered to be a nuisance to property owners.

I have to question why the Regional District of Nanaimo is so interested in what a small non-profit animal shelter is doing. There must be other issues in the community that are far more important to the people.
