Re: Does AAS approve of riding horses?

I know what you're trying to say. I certainly have witnessed, read, and heard about the horrors that happen to horses. I have a friend that has a few horses that she has acquired over the years. (I think some of them have been given to her by people who no longer wanted the responsibility and costs involved with having a horse). She is a beautiful person. A real "softy", which is why she has ended up with some of these horses. She allows physically, and mentally or emotionally disabled children to ride her horses. To connect with them. She doesn't charge for this and it has really improved the lives of these kids. I guess I never really thought of this as a bad thing.
If we each looked at our lives - right now - we would all be guilty of somehow using animals. Do we all buy 100% of our household and personal products from manufacturers that do not test on animals or use animal by-products? Are we all vegans? Gosh, was our bed or table made from the forests that when cut down destroyed the homes of many animals? Is the prescription in our bathroom created by testing on animals, first?
I know this is very long-winded. But as an animal lover I always try to do my best. However, I'm finding it so hard to keep up with everything. Does anyone understand what I mean? For example, I'd love to be a member of PETA but I fear that somewhere in my daily life I will be "violating" what PETA members speak out against. I know that education is the key. But unless we live the lives of Tibetan monks, we are all somehow guilty of being cruel to animals.
(Sorry, I know I have eluded to numerous difficult discussions).
